Summer is finally here! It’s the perfect time to head outdoors or take a dip in the pool. But while the sunny weather is great for your tan, it can be a bit hard on your trees. Summer storms, hot weather, bugs and diseases can be deadly to your trees. Luckily, you can take a few simple steps to help keep your front or back yard happy and healthy all summer long. Pest inspections, new watering schedules and tree trimming can all help your tree survive the season.

Here are six tree care tips to keep your trees healthy this summer:

  • Storm damage prevention: Summer is notable for its storms. Unfortunately, a big storm could send a falling tree limb crashing down on the roof of your home or even through a bedroom window. Having a professional assess the safety of the tree can help prevent unnecessary damage by removing weak limbs. They’ll inspect the tree before providing any necessary tree pruning in Watertown, MA.
  • Schedule a pest inspection: This is another preventative step that can save you a lot of money and stress in the long run. Many pests are especially active during the summer months and can be harmful to your trees. Finding any issues early allows you to take the necessary steps to control the problem before it gets worse. Contact a professional now to schedule your inspection.
  • Increased watering: Just like humans, trees require more water during the summer months to stay hydrated and healthy. The hot temperatures cause them to go through water quickly, requiring additional watering. Most trees require one inch of water once a week to cover their root system. Be careful not to overwater, as it can do more harm than good.
  • Mulching: Forgot to mulch this spring? Don’t worry, it’s not too late! Mulching should always be a part of your annual tree care routine, as it reduces weeds and helps conserve soil moisture. Most trees need to be protected with approximately three to four inches of shredded hardwood mulch. Be careful not to mulch directly around the trunk of the tree, as it can encourage the development of diseases and attract insects.
  • Pruning: Most tree pruning should be done during the dormant season, but there are a few situations in which summer pruning is necessary. Diseased and dead branches should be pruned both for the tree’s health and your safety. Flowering trees should also be pruned in the summer once they finish blooming. Consult a professional to determine the best schedule for tree pruning in Watertown, MA.
  • Fertilization: A tree needs proper nutrition to stay strong and healthy during the summer months. Fertilization provides the tree with adequate nutrition to grow, while also fighting off any diseases or pests. Fertilizing the tree once per summer will help foster positive growth through the rest of the year.

Taking these steps now will help keep your tree strong and healthy all year long. Call BBD Tree Service today to learn more about tree pruning and tree trimming in Watertown, MA!

  • I really liked it when you said that the summer season is known for its storms, so it is best to hire a professional and assess the tree before then to see if it needs any type of service to keep it safe. I think the safety planning should begin as early as now because the last time, a small tree fell on the shed. No one wants that to happen to the house. We will get someone to check the old tree on the front lawn.

It would be very helpful to hire a tree trimming service next spring and summer. I’m sure that pruning and trimming would help my trees stay healthy. This will help get rid of any disease my trees might be experiencing, like you said.
